The High Cost of Inaction

Crime Surge Since COVID

Retail crime surged 93% since the pandemic. High-risk businesses are increasingly vulnerable, and theft is only getting more aggressive.

$112 Billion Lost to Retail Crime

Physical crime isn’t just a security problem — it’s a bottom-line killer. Retailers lost over $112 billion in 2022 due to theft, with average shrink rates climbing to 1.6%.

One Bad Search Result = 22% Revenue Loss

Nearly 60% of brands hit by reputation crises never fully recover. A single negative Google result can reduce revenue by up to 22%.

One Post Can Change Everything

A single viral post can unravel a small business overnight — with little warning and few second chances. The businesses most at risk are often the least prepared to manage a digital crisis.

Smash-and-Grab Epidemic

These fast, violent crimes leave behind damage, downtime, and lasting fear. California retailers lost $8.7 billion in 2023 from smash-and-grab and organized retail crime.

Reputation = 63% of Company Value

Reputation risk is business risk — and it's visible, viral, and unforgiving.. Over 60% of a company’s market value is reputation-driven — and vulnerable to social media backlash.

Crises are easier

to prevent than repair.

We’ve seen how bad it can get — but we’ve also seen how much better it can be.

Most Crises Aren’t Random — They’re Predictable: Break-ins, bad press, viral videos...these things don’t just happen. With the right preparation, you can spot patterns early and take action before things spiral.

You Can Respond Fast — and With Confidence: When your team knows what to do, who does it, and when — there's no need for panic. Just action. Clear plans turn chaos into control.

You Don’t Need a PR Firm or Security Team on Retainer: This isn’t about hiring a crisis army — it’s about learning the essentials and building a system that works for your size and budget.

MEET YOUR PRESENTERS

JEFF BARTLEY &

CYNDEE HARRISON

Jeff Bartley is Sapphire Risk’s Senior Asset Protection Consultant. Jeff has been working in the Security/Asset Protection field for over 30 years. His career has been primarily in high-risk retail and logistics security across North America, i.e., pawn, jewelry, cannabis, etc. Jeff also manages Sapphire Risk’s “Phase Three” projects, which include security employee training, risk assessments, Culture of Honesty programs, robbery awareness, standard operational procedures (SOP’s), and their point-of-sale data analytics team, which reviews transaction exception reports for unusual activity.

Cyndee Harrison is the Founder of PR Shield and a seasoned communications strategist with over 20 years of experience helping organizations navigate brand reputation, crisis communication, and stakeholder trust. She serves on the NALA Certifying Board, and is a member of Wayne State University’s Office of Executive Development. Cyndee works closely with chambers of commerce and local business groups, leading community-focused programs that emphasize proactive PR, practical response planning, and digital credibility. She is a frequent speaker and leads training sessions on brand resilience for business leaders and associations across the U.S.

Nearly three years ago, the pawn industry was shaken by the tragic loss of a Texas pawnbroker during a senseless robbery. At the time, Cyndee was working to launch the industry’s first online learning portal, an initiative spearheaded by the Mississippi Pawnbrokers Association.

Though she and Jeff Bartley were only acquaintances then, Cyndee reached out to ask if he might be willing to contribute his expertise. Jeff generously stepped forward — not only volunteering to host a timely, open-access webinar but also helping transform a moment of grief into one of growth. His willingness to educate others and elevate safety awareness in the face of tragedy laid the foundation for what has since become a valued professional partnership and friendship.
