The Most Powerful PR Tool You Own Is Free — And You’re Probably Ignoring It

June 04, 20263 min read

A friend was spending thousands a month on ads while the free tool that mattered most sat untouched. Here’s what I found — and the five moves that fix it.

I sat down with a business owner I know from my networking group a while back. He was frustrated. He was spending real money — a few thousand a month on Google ads — and the phone still wasn’t ringing the way he wanted.

So I did the simplest thing. I pulled out my phone and Googled his business, the way a customer would. Because people check before they choose — even when they’re checking a business that came from a personal referral.

His hours were wrong. His photos were three years old. A one-star review from eight months ago was sitting right at the top — one he didn’t even know existed — with no response. And the “about” section was blank.

Here’s the part that’s heartbreaking. This is a man who has poured everything into building his reputation. But reputations aren’t earned just by doing good work and being a good person anymore. Brand reputations have to be managed. And the proof was right there on my screen: the results at the top of my search were for his competitor down the road. Fresh photos. Every review answered. Hours correct. A post from that morning.

He was paying to send people to a storefront with the lights off.

And the tool that would’ve fixed most of it was free. He already owned it. He’d just never touched it.

Your Profile Is Where PR and SEO Meet

Your Google Business Profile — the little panel that appears when someone searches your name — is the single most underused PR tool most owners have. It’s free, it’s the first thing a customer sees, and increasingly it’s the first thing the machines see too. The silo between PR and SEO is dead. Your reputation and your findability are the same project now, and your profile is where they meet.

Five Free Moves That Wake It Up

1. Claim it and complete it. Fill in every field, and keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere online. Consistency reads as proof you’re real.

2. Feed it photos — and keep them fresh. Real photos, never stock. A profile that updates looks alive. A froze none looks closed.

3. Treat reviews like the storefront they are. Reviews are the most visible part of your PR strategy — not your logo, not your website. Respond to every one.

4. Use Posts and Q&A. They’re free real estate. Post like a billboard that costs nothing, and seed the Q&A before someone else answers for you.

5. Remember who else is reading. When AI gets asked whether you’re any good, your profile is one of the first places it looks. Your reputation isn’t just what you say about yourself —it’s the trail of proof you leave behind for humans and machines to find.

Two Bonus Habits Almost Nobody Talks About

Use your own directions, daily. Before you leave for work, search your business, click through to your profile, and tap ‘directions’ as if you didn’t know the way. It feels old-school — but real, regular use of that map can’t hurt, and I suspect it helps.

Become a prolific reviewer yourself. Leave genuine reviews for the local places you use — even when traveling. It’s the golden rule in action. And practically, your own standing as a reviewer can matter if you ever need to report a bogus review on your profile.

Do This Tonight

Fix your hours. Add three current photos. Answer every review that doesn’t have a reply — even if all you write is “thank you.” Fifteen minutes. It’s the highest-return fifteen minutes in your marketing this week.
